The treatment plant also houses the
laboratory facilities and the administrative offices.
This facility is owned and operated by the City of Independence. It was constructed
in 1978 at a cost of 10.8 million dollars and uses the complete mix activated sludge
process. The treatment plant is operated and maintained 24 hours per day, 7 days
per week by state licensed wastewater operators for
wastewater treatment and solids disposal.
The plant was designed for an average daily flow of 10 million gallons and a peak
daily flow of 18.8 million gallons. The plant operates under an NPDES Permit issued by the State of
Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
The
plant’s teardrop shaped pond, fed by the treatment plant’s effluent, provides interest
for tour groups and visitors, and also provides a year round habitat for ducks,
geese, and goldfish. The pond’s ability to support life demonstrates to the public
the quality of the plant’s effluent.
