Streets Sales Tax

On August 4, 1998, Independence voters approved a 1/2 cent sales tax for
streets and parks with 3/8 cent going to streets and 1/8 cent going to parks. The
tax increase began on Jan. 1, 1999 and will end on Dec. 31, 2003. The following
projects have been completed with that sales tax:
Salisbury Road, 24 Hwy to Dickinson
The project added storm sewers, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
Noland, 35th to 23rd Street
Existing pavement was repaired and a new surface was placed on top of the pavement.
39th & Phelps
Traffic signals were replaced to allow left turn phases and variable timing.
Blue Ridge & Westport
Traffic signals were added and the intersection was realigned.
Maywood Bridge
Replaced.
Ash Street Bridge
Replaced.
Bundschu Road Culvert, east of 7 Highway
Replaced.
Ann StreetnCulvert, north of Truman Road
Replaced.
29th & Windsor Culvert
Replaced.
Eureka Road Culvert, east of R.D. Mize
Replaced.
5 Year Overlay Program
Thirty-five percent of the City's 580 miles of streets, or 203 miles, were to be
repaved. Overlay projects are continuing, but by the end of the year, 289 miles
of streets will have been repaved.
On Aug. 6, 2002, voters approved a 3/8 cent sales tax for streets, bridges, culverts
and traffic signals. The sales tax will last five years, beginning January 1, 2004
and ending December 31, 2008. A total of $33,000,000 will be spent on the following
projects:
New 5 Year Overlay Program
200 Miles of streets will be repaved. (Cost: 200 miles at $90,000 per mile, total
$18,000,000)
Bridges and Culverts
Eight deteriorated bridges and culverts will be replaced or repaired. (Cost: $7,400,000)
Bundschu Road at Little Blue River Bridge Replacement
Main Street at Kansas Bridge Replacement
Liberty, North of Jones Rd. Culvert
Crackerneck, East of Linwood Culvert
Northern, South of 23rd Street Bridge Replacement
Vermont at 27th Street Culvert
Noland Road at 31st Street Bridge Replacement
Strode Road Bridge Repairs
Street Improvements
Santa Fe/McCoy Street from 23rd Street to Santa Fe Park will be reconstructed to
include curbs, sidewalks, and storm sewers. (Cost: $1,730,000)
Intersection and Median Improvements
About 2.3 miles of medians will be replaced and nine street intersection improvements
will be made. (Cost: $2,550,000)

Jones and Truman Intersection
The Street Oversight Committee, made up of unpaid volunteers, is responsible for
monitoring the expenditures of the Streets sales tax. The committee makes formal
reports to the City Council at least twice a year.
