Newspaper
-
Newspaper and newsprint such as green bar computer paper, only.
- Remove string, rubber bands, and plastic.
Magazines
-
Magazines and thin catalogs with slick pages throughout.
Office Paper
-
Office paper, envelopes, staionary, fax pages, receipts.
- Junk mail, greeting cards.
- No mailing labels, stickers, spirals, rubber bands, carbon paper, or tissue.
Corrugated Cardboard
-
Corrugated cardboard and paper grocery bags.
Paperboard
-
Non-corrugated paperboard such as cereal boxes, shoe boxes, gift boxes, soda and
beer boxes, paper towel rolls, and paper egg cartons
- Thick catalogs and telephone books.
- Magazines that do not have slick pages throughout.
- No cellophane windows or wrapping.
Glass
-
The City of Independence will stop accepting glass at its recycling centers Thursday, February 1, 2007 because the City can no longer find a company that will take glass for recycling. The change is necessary because the City was recently notified by its recycling contractor that it would no longer accept the glass. Between now and the February 1 deadline the City will dispose of glass collected at its recycling centers.
Steel and Aluminum Cans

Food and beverage cans only.
- Paper labels do not have to be removed.
Plastic
-
#1 and #2 plastic bottles and jars (must have a neck).
remove lids and metal neck rings. - No plastic tubs (butter, yogurt, etc.).
- No drain opener or automotive product containers. This includes motor oil and
windshield wiper fluid.
Toner Cartridges

Please bring them in their original packaging if possible.
Batteries
-
Dry cell only.
- No lead acid batteries (automobile, motorcycle, or lawnmower)
- The following four types are acceptable, they come in sizes such as AAA, AA, C,
D, 9 volt, and smaller: alkaline, nickel cadmium (rechargeable), button batteries
(used in hearing aids, watches, and calculators), lithium.
- Please separate the different kinds of batteries. Seal lithium batteries in plastic
bags. They are water reactive and may explode if exposed to moisture. Package leaking
or corroded batteries separately in a leak-proof plastic bag.
