Overview
The Independence Power and Light Department (IPL) has placed light emitting diode
(LED) street light fixtures in three locations for evaluation. IPL has been following
the development of the LED street lights since interest in the new technology peaked
about three years ago. LED fixtures are estimated to reduce energy consumption by
50% to 70% and result in significant maintenance cost savings since LED lights last
two to six times longer than standard street lights.
Through an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant awarded to the City of
Independence by the U.S. Department of Energy, IPL has installed three pilot LED
projects to compare LED fixtures with existing street light fixtures currently in
use. LED street light fixtures put out a white light compared to a more yellow light
of existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street light fixtures. As part of the evaluation;
IPL invites you to share your observations by taking our survey. Please take an
early evening tour of the three areas and let us know your opinion. Your comments
for each specific location are critical to the success of this evaluation of installing
more LED street lights in Independence.
Three LED Pilot Project Surveys
Residential
- Stone Canyon Subdivision, West of R.D. Mize
Commercial
- Intersection of Little Blue Parkway and 37th Terr.
- 37th Terr west of the intersection with Little Blue parkway.
All evaluation areas are comparing Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures with existing
High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures. Factors including the number of poles used,
mounting height of lights and light output are basically the same for both types
of fixtures.
Please limit your evaluation to early nighttime between 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
to be respectful to the residents and businesses in the area.
