In 1995, a seven-member volunteer committee was created by theCity Council to promote park and recreation activities, facilities,and fund raising efforts within the community. The group alsoserves as the oversight committee for improvements madethrough park sales tax efforts. The commission meets regularlyon the last Thursday of each month to discuss park-related issuesand developments. The public is welcome to attend. Please contactthe Parks and Recreation Administration office at 325-7360.If you would like to be considered for commission membership,please call the City Council office at 325-7022.

Adopt-A-Park
The Parks and Recreation Department frequently works withcommunity volunteer groups and organizations in an effort toimprove our various park sites. Work projects are generallydetermined on an individual basis in order to fully meet the needsof each volunteering group and the park to be adopted. If yourclub or organization is interested in putting a little sweat equity inone of your Independence parks, please contact the Parks andRecreation Administration office at 325-7360.

Tree Commission
A five-member advisory group explores tree-related issues in theIndependence community. This commission investigates anyconcerns related to those trees in public areas and rights-of-way,promote the City's annual Arbor Day event and assist in developingworkshops and other public education efforts. Thanks inlarge part to the efforts of this group, the City has annuallyreceived the National Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USAAward since 2000. Sports Commission
The Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to work withinterested volunteers to address youth and adult athletic issueswithin the community. This group meets on a quarterly basis,with representation from staff and each of the athletic leagues thatutilize City fields and facilities, to discuss issues of commonimportance.
