Independence Transportation for All to host family open house

The City of Independence is hosting a family-fun night out event for their Independence Transportation for All planning! The City and the consulting team leading the project are hosting a Family Night Out Public Open House from 5-7 PM on Monday, Feb. 19 at the Roger T. Sermon Community Center.

The event will include a bicycle lesson and safety training, an interactive educational event hosted by BikeWalkKC for anyone who wants to learn how to ride a bike, the rules of the road and how to safely navigate the road as a person walking or biking. The program is open to those of all ages. Parents and caretakers are welcome to let their children enjoy the program while they look at the draft exhibits.

The City is in the middle of the Transportation for All planning process. The goal of the plan is to develop a citywide-multimodal transportation network. This project, part of the Mid-America Regional Council's Planning Sustainable Places programs, seeks to determine viable, efficient transportation for all roadway users, including sidewalks, bikeways, mobility hubs and transit routes, to make transportation safe, convenient and connected.

Throughout the planning process, the City has heard from parents and community members that students who want to walk or bike to school face many challenges. These challenges primarily relate to the lack of protected walking and biking infrastructure, especially on common routes to school. This event is designed so parents can come after work with their children and join in on the interactive fun, while participating in an open house.
