Explorer Program

The Independence Police Department Explorer Post Program is geared towards guiding young people who are interested in careers in law enforcement. Young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 learn the importance of teamwork, developing leadership skills, and ethical methods of problem solving while having fun in a law enforcement environment. To remain in the program Explorers must maintain a 2.0 grade point average as well as make a commitment to attend meetings and attend special events. Independence Police Explorers ride with officers, assist with traffic control, complete reports, and fingerprint children among many other duties.

Leadership for the program is provided by police officers and other police department employees. The Explorer Post is maintained through fund-raising activities in the community. Many former Explorers go on to careers in the law enforcement field.
