Food Handler Class Information Page

Attention: Please Read the Following:

All food service employees are required to obtain a Food Handler Permit.

Only food service managers working in Independence are required to obtain the Food Manager Permit.

If you have a comparable food safety certification (ServSafe, Culinary Degree, etc.), it is not necessary to attend either class. However, it is required to obtain a permit. The fee is $15.00 for a Food Handler permit and $30.00 for a Manager Permit. Please bring proof of your certification (card, certificate, diploma, etc.) and a photo I.D. to the Health Department. (515 S. Liberty) Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to do so.

Registration for the following classes requires prepayment.
Food Handler classes are $15.00 and Food Manager classes are $30.00. Class registration fees are not refundable. Upon attendance of the class and successful completion of the required test, class fees will be applied to the permit fee (no additional fee is required). Volunteers who are acquiring a permit to work on the premises of a non-profit organization may qualify for a permit fee exemption, contact the Health Department at (816) 325-7803 prior to registering for further details.

If you are unable to attend your registered class, please call the Health Department at (816) 325-7803 to reschedule prior to class start time (this will be allowed one time only). “No shows” and “Late Arrivals” will be required to re-register and pay the registration fees to attend another class.

Classes will be canceled if the Independence Schools are closed due to inclement weather.
