General Information Adoptions Lost & Found Pets
AFTER HOUR EMERGENCIES We respond to "emergency calls only." Contact the Independence Police Department at 911 and they will page the "on call" officer. Emergencies are injured animals and animal bites and do not include strays running at large or barking dogs.
LEGAL LIMIT FOR INDEPENDENCE Two dogs and two cats over the age of six (6) months per residence.
TRAP USAGE We will provide you with a trap for raccoons, squirrels, cats and opossums, etc. for seven (7) days. The trap must be returned at the end of the seven (7) days in good working condition or $50 (cost to replace the trap) will be charged to you.
ANIMAL CLAIM FEE
"Unaltered" means not spayed or neutered.
"Altered" means they are spayed or neutered and proof can be provided by a licensed veterinarian.
Persons claiming their "unaltered" dogs which have been picked-up can expect to pay fifty dollars ($50) per animal "impoundment fee" and ten dollars ($10) boarding fee each day thereafter.
Persons claiming their "altered" dogs can expect to pay thirty dollars ($30) per animal "impoundment fee" and ten dollars ($10) boarding fee each day thereafter.
The first time your dog is impounded it will also be micro-chipped, there is a $10 fee for this.
On the second conviction for unrestrained your dog will be spayed/neutered, and you will have to pay for the surgery and the impoundment fees.
On the third conviction, your dog will not be returned to you.
Persons claiming their cats can expect to pay thirty dollars ($30) per animal pick-up fee, eight dollars ($8) boarding fee per day thereafter.
The first time your cat is impounded it will also be micro-chipped, there is a $10 fee for this.

ALL ANIMALS MUST HAVE "PROOF OF CURRENT RABIES VACCINATION" BEFORE LEAVING THE SHELTER This means before the animal goes home, if it does not have a current rabies, the owner will be given a ticket and given 5 business days to provide proof to Animal Servicesl. If the owner fails to comply a warrant will be issued for them.
CITATIONS If we have impounded your animal you will receive a citation for:
| Animal Running at Large: Independence City Codes requires all animals to be properly restrained within a securely fenced yard or on a chain or leash. They are never to be unrestrained. | PIT BULL OWNERSHIP Pit bulls are only allowed in the city limits if they were registered before August 28, 2006. No new pit bulls are allowed to register after this date.
Animal Control Officers are on duty everyday. If you want to report a dead animal, an animal in a trap or a stray animal in your possession call 816-325-7205.
