Fire Chief: Sandy Schiess
This position reports directly to the City Manager.
Job Summary:
Manages and directs the overall administrative operations
of the fire department, assuring that goals and objectives
are achieved to afford the community the best possible emergency
and non-emergency services.
Essential Job Function:
Plans long-range goals, objectives, organizational structure, and sets the overall direction for the
department. Develops, communicates, and monitors policies, procedures, and standards for the
department; implements improvement when necessary.
Monitors and communicates, and monitors policies, procedures, and standards for the department to
identify and corrects deficiencies or problems.
Plans, coordinates, assigns, and monitors performance and coaches, counsels, mentors, trains, and
advises employees in department for the dual goals of meeting department goals and employee career
development.
Conducts regular staff meetings to review progress, accomplishments, budgets, strategies, and plans
for the department.
Confers with upper management to keep them informed on key issues and progress toward objectives and
to gain their support and approval; makes recommendations to assist management in making needed
improvements.
Ensures that quality standards and compliance with regulations are maintained.
Signs official and other documents to approve or ensure information adequacy, accuracy, and legitimacy.
Maintains and upgrades professional knowledge, skills, and development by attending seminars and
training programs and reading trade and professional journals and publications.
Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews, and controls work production and activities, to include procedures,
allocation of resources, problem resolution, and training of employees.
Responds to fires and emergencies; takes charge of strategic operations at the scene.
Performs special assignments as requested, to include researching and preparing reports and projects,
developing and implementing programs, and technical data to the City Manager, City Council, management,
and others.
Represents the City at various functions such as making
speeches at civic and business associations, meeting with
influential persons within the community, developers, officials,
citizens, and representatives of the press, to establish
goodwill and resolve/respond to issues.
Secures, justifies, and monitors use of budgetary monies and capital.
Writes detailed or technical reports of all findings, conclusions, and recommendations based on a
thorough analysis and interpretation of data for presentation to others.
Identifies and develops potential sources of supplies, materials, equipment, and services that are
capable of providing appropriate quality at appropriate prices.
Creates and designs plans and specifications, using all available sources of background information,
for a project or program to meet the needs of the City/Department.
Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with City policies, procedures and applicable laws
including: interviewing, hiring and training, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising
performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Responds to all major citizens complaints.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
