The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded
a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of
Independence for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June
30, 2005. In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a governmental unit must
publish an easily readable, efficiently organized comprehensive annual financial report,
the contents of which conform to program standards. Such reports must satisfy both
generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements. A Certificate
of Achievement is valid for a period of one year only. We believe our current CAFR
continues to conform to the Certificate of Achievement Program requirements and we are
submitting it to the GFOA to determine its eligibility for another certificate.
The City is also the recipient of GFOA's Award for Distinguished Budget Presentation for
its annual budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2005. In order to receive this
award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria
as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan and as a communications
medium. This award is valid for a period of one year only. We believe our current
budget continues to conform to program requirements, and we are submitting it to GFOA
to determine its eligibility for another award.
