Behind the Scenes
It takes a lot of hard work to keep City 7 broadcasting 24 hours per day. We thought you'd like to learn more about what we do and how we do it:

A total of seven S-VHS and DVCAM-format tape machines are used to play various videos on City 7.

City 7’s operations and signal to Comcast cable are based out of a studio in City Hall. The City 7 Studio houses all of the City’s on-air and portable video production equipment, an Avid non-linear editing system, and video duplication equipment. The editing system allows staff to import footage, digitally manipulate it, add graphics and effects, and then export the final product to videotape for playback on the channel.
Two other computers are used to create and play the channel’s electronic bulletin board. Staff creates, edits, and schedules the informative slides that are seen on City 7. One feature of the software gives staff the ability to schedule start and stop dates for each page. This ensures that dated information runs only when it should.
Everything played on City 7 comes from the Studio Control Room. It holds equipment for tape playback, a “big dish” satellite receiver and all the controls for broadcasting live public meetings. During City Council, Planning Commission, or TIF Commission meetings, City 7 staff uses three remote-operated cameras. Various tape, DVD, and server machines record the meeting for later playback on the air, posting to the Web, and distribution to others. To play back meetings and other programs, the Control Room has seven tape machines and an automated playback controller. By automating when tapes are played, programs can run when staff members are not at work, such as evenings and weekends.
- City 7's operations are fed the same amount of electricity as two typical residential homes.
- The cameras that City 7 uses to broadcast meetings are the same model that the White House uses for video conferencing in its Situation Room.
- Online visitors watch about 1,000 streaming videos from City 7 each month!
- In order for staff to distinguish among them, City 7's three primary video cameras are named "Harry", "Bess" and "Margaret."
We welcome you to watch the interesting programs that we broadcast during the day, and catch up on exciting events throughout Independence by viewing the Bulletin Board.
