The neighborhood watch program is also associated with programs outside of the individual neighborhoods. Although not all of these items are related to individual watch groups, they are good gatherings to foster and grow relationships within the community. Some of our larger events are as follows:

Fundraiser

Eat spaghetti this Thursday and help raise money for volunteer programs of the Independence Police Department! The event is also a community cooking contest and gathering and will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at Maywood Baptist Church, 10505 E. Winner Rd.

IPD Crime Prevention Officer Rob Romey said the fundraiser will benefit programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Volunteers in Police Service, and Police Explorers. This includes money for supplies, as well as crime prevention educational material and items deemed necessary to promote crime prevention education in the City of Independence.

“We added the cooking contest because they are popular and we thought it would be fun,” Officer Romey said. “Residents can bring in samples of their own spaghetti sauce or dessert to compete with other neighbors/blockwatch groups.

”Although the evening is geared around fundraising, the event is focused on community building, especially in regards to networking among the 40 active blockwatch groups in Independence,” Officer Romey said.

Officer Romey, who said he expects between 200 and 300 to attend, will be on hand to promote Neighborhood Watch, and encourage growth in the program.
