Inspections
Routine inspections of food establishments is an ongoing process. All food establishments in the City of Independence are routinely inspected twice a year. However, if the Health Department deems it necessary, establishments may be inspected with more frequency.

Critical Violation: A violation that relates directly to factors which lead to foodborne illnesses.
Non-Critical Violation: A violation that relates to maintenance and cleanliness of food service operations.

All critical violations are corrected within 72 hours by food service establishments. *The inspection reports posted in the web may not indicate this correction. View Recent Health Inspections.

Food Safety Training Classes
Food Safety Training Classes are conducted each week. Classes are offered in English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), and Sign Language for Hearing Impaired.

Participants receive a Food Handler Permit after successfully passing a written test. These permits are certified for 3 years.

Duplicate Permit fee is $3.00. You may obtain a duplicate permit Monday through Friday at the Independence Health Department, 515 S. Liberty St., Independence, MO

Registration for the following classes requires prepayment.
Food Handler classes are $15.00 and Food Manager classes $30.00. There is no charge for Food Handler classes to those who are volunteers or over the age of 65.
Registration fees will not be refunded but will be applied to the permit fee if you attend this session and pass the test. If you cannot attend the class for which you pre-paid and reschedule by at least noon the day prior to the class, the prepayment can be applied to the rescheduled class.
No one will be admitted after the class has started. Please arrive early!

Classes will be canceled if the Independence Schools are cancelled due to inclement weather.

FREE Hepatitis A & Hepatitis B Vaccine Clinic
When: Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 1:00 & 3:30 Food Handler classes
Where: Independence Health Department, 515 S. Liberty Street
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to class time for your vaccination.
Bring immunization card or documentation of previous vaccinations.

Go north on Noland Road approximately 3 mi to Walnut Street. Turn west, go 3 blocks to S. Liberty Street then make a left.

From I-435
Exit I-435 a t Truman Road and turn east. Go approximately 4 mi. to Liberty Street. Turn south on Liberty Street.

Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple, Independence, MO
From I-70
Go north on Noland Road 3.3 mi. to Truman Road. Turn west on Truman Road, go six blocks to Pleasant Street. Turn left into the parking lot at the corner of Truman Road and Pleasant Street. This will place you on the back side of the Truman Memorial Building, which is marked as su ch on the back of the building. Enter the building from the Pleasant Street entrance and go to the lower level, multi-p urpose room.

From I-435
Exit I-435 a t Truman Road and turn east. Go 3.6 mi. to Pleasant Street. Turn south on Pleasant and park in the parking lot at the corner of Truman and Pleasant Street. This will place you on the back side of the Truman Memor ial Building, which is marked as such on the back of the building. Enter the building from the Pleasant Street entrance and go to the lower level, mult i-purpose room.

Note: While the physical address of the Memorial Building is 416 W. Maple S t., it is a one-way street going east in front of the building. There is no parking available on the street. Parking is available at the corner of Pleasant and Truman. Access to the building is on Pleasant Street across from the Palmer Center.

Food Manager's Training
Offered the second and fourth Monday of each month. Classes are 4 hours in duration and cost $30.00. Food Manager classes require preregistration and you may pre-register using the online system or by calling (816) 325-7803.

Food Manager classes are held at the Independence Health Deparment at 515 S. Liberty Street, Independence, MO. A SERVSAFE certificate is acceptable in lieu of, (in place of) attending this class for purpose of obtaining a Food Manager's Card, however, the cost remains the same.
