About Us

Welcome to the City of Independence Animal Services Division, where we are working to protect animals and people. We have a staff of concerned and caring individuals in the field, kennel, and office willing to assist you however possible.

If you own a pet, responsible pet ownership is something expected by your friends and neighbors to ensure both their peace of mind, and the overall living conditions of our city. The law has certain requirements for every animal:

  • Vaccinations - rabies required annually
  • Leash law - leash required whenever animal is off the owner's property
  • All animals reclaimed from the Independence Animal Shelter must be microchipped

We invite you to visit the Independence Animal Shelter. Animal Services Division Officers, Community Liason, and Division Manager may be scheduled to appear at clubs, organizations, public events, or neighborhood association meetings. If your group would like to schedule a speaker for a particular topic or problem in the neighborhood, please call (816) 325-7211.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist in many areas. In this way you can help us as we work towards adopting every animal possible into new and loving permanent homes.
